Apps Management Stuffs

There are work apps not included in elementary OS which we need to install ourselves for example LibreOffice, multimedia tools like Kdenlive, and games like TuxMath and 0 A.D. Follow this guide to get what you need: Guide to Install 20 Standard Apps on elementary OS.

We recommend Synaptic to help you manage standard apps:

$ sudo apt-get install synaptic apt-xapian-index software-properties-gtk

File Searching

Do you search often? Files does not have complete searching functionality thus you can add Catfish searching utility to help yourself. Once installed, open Files. To search files normally, right-click blank space in the folder you want to do search, open with Catfish, and search. That's it.

To install Catfish:

$ sudo apt-get install catfish

Multimedia Stuffs

Failed playing MP4? Install codecs:

$ sudo apt-get install libavcodec-extra gstreamer1.0-libav

Desktop Theme Stuffs

Enable Dark Mode: open System Settings > Desktop > Appearance > switch from Default to Dark Mode choice > close. Note: you can also schedule when your computer switches automatically to dark mode in that settings.

Screen and Accessibility

Shrink Resolution: open System Settings > Displays > click gear button > switch resolution to one you wish > Apply > Keep This Configuration > close.

Enlarge Fonts: open System Settings > Accessibility > enable Show in Panel (to bottom left) > the accessibility button will show on top panel > click it > click plus to increase screen's font size > click minus to decrease it.

 (Standard display resolution 1360x768 with text size made larger by 125%)

Hand Gesture Stuffs

For example, on one hand 6.0 introduces new shortcuts and on the other hand Terminal cannot be opened by our standard Ctrl+Alt+T so we can custom it.

Learn shortcut keys: hold Windows key to open the shortcuts list on screen.

Set custom shortcut: for example, to set one to Terminal, open System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > change Windows+T to Ctrl+Alt+T > close.

Touchpad handling: go to System Settings > Mouse & Touchpad > Touchpad > enable Tap to click > disable Natural scrolling is good for most laptop users.

Afterwords

Congratulations and thank you to elementary OS developers team for making version 6 great computing for people!
